The Irish Kilt Club came into being in July 2003 in response to the kilt no longer being worn by boys for Irish Dance.
Many members are ex-dancers or pipers who want to prevent the kilt and its Irish history from being lost, of Irish blood or living abroad (the Diaspora).
What is an Irish kilt?
1. An Irish kilt is a kilt in a tartan of Irish family name
2. a tartan of place - an Irish County, National, Irish Diaspora (above) or St Patrick's tartan
or
3. the distinctively single coloured kilt (mainly saffron or green but red and blue are sometimes used)
Most modern kilts come from Scottish Kilt makers or small makers in Ireland - see links page.
A few single coloured kilts in washable materials come by mail order (internet sales) from the USA and the Dublin Woollen Mills manufacture a small range of kilts for retail sale in Ireland.
The club is still forming but when fully up and running we plan to:
Provide a forum for discussing "Irish kilts" and furthering study and debate
Promote the wearing of the kilt as "Irish" within Ireland North and South and the wider diaspora
Identify suppliers and negotiate member discounts on kilts/accessories/tartans for those wishing to wear an Irish kilt for formal or informal wear
Build a website and suppliers directory
